Description
This prescaler is intended for use in frequency counter and phase locked loop applications. The performance and convenience features of this prescaler assure reliable frequency scaling. Consider the summary of design features presented here to see how this is accomplished.
A power meter option is available for the 3010 Prescaler. This option makes possible a measurement of the 3010 front panel RF Input power. By connecting a DVM to the back panel BNC connector, input power levels in the -21 to 0 dBm range for frequencies from 50 to 500 MHz are displayed. Features
Automatic Level Control (ALC) -- provides maximum AM and noise tolerance by automatically adjusting input attenuation so that the drive level at the input of the ECL decade divider is held constant. The ALC will level input signal variations with frequencies up to 10 KHz over a range of at least 20 dB for RF Input frequencies less than 500 MHz.
Overload Indicator -- gives warning before the ECL divider becomes overdriven. Excess input signal levels will overload the ECL divider and cause measurement errors. If the automatic input attenuator cannot compensate for the excess signal level, a front panel indicator warns of a pending overload.
Output Blanking -- eliminates counting errors at marginal signal levels. If the input signal level falls below the preset threshold, the output is set to logic zero, which inhibits counting.
50-Ohm Output Line Driver -- guarantees a reliable scaling factor. Reflections will occur, causing counting errors, when using an un-terminated coax cable between any prescaler output and PLL or frequency counter input. The line driver of this prescaler allows a feed-thru termination to be connected at the PLL or counter input to eliminate scaling problems.
